The
Way It Works With Me
By
Chad
Lilly
It happens when I’m washing the dishes,
doing the laundry, or making my bed;
it happens usually when
I’m not thinking anything,
when my thoughts are clear
of the daily debris that collects
in the head . . . it seems to happen
mostly when I’m not expecting it to happen,
when my mind is slightly
occupied with some mundane chore
that requires a minimal amount of thought
to accomplish . . . like shaving,
or driving (always while driving);
anything that preoccupies
the conscious mind long enough
for the imagination to get restless
and rise from the formless
sea of swirling expression to take
the shape of words . . . to paint
these pictures I see.
That’s the way it works with me,
how these words find their way to paper,
how these pictures get painted
and displayed for you to read.
(Why . . . is another story)
