I Wonder
by
Chaya Anavi

One night when a new day had just begun,
enticed by the moonlight,
I stood under many a gleaming star
observing the town now transformed--
A not so bustling city lying in lone rest--
and wondering at the same moment
whether I am the only observer,
though it is known that not all is peaceful at night,
(Only imagine all the calamity being inflicted
as beings sleep soundly in their beds and
yet we know others are wreaking
upon other twisted minds and
those whose bed is no more than a dark alley corner.)
wondering why it is still so easy
to be so enchanted in such pleasing notions
under the spell of a stary sky
overlooking a quiet town,
When not all nights have stars
and the town is not truly still at all.
Are such diminutive glowing dots so hypnotizing?
No, this scene is simply too cliched,
for I am not really enticed in the illumination,
observing the town still indistinguishable,
rooftops no prettier, streets no cleaner, world still as tarnished
and wondering at the same moment
whether I am the only observer
of this truth.
Perhaps someone somewhere stands
under no stars and no moon
on just another bleak, dreary night
in the middle of nowhere
and feels the same way.
Fool.
