Ghazal 1
by
David Nuffer
Spilling into each other to obey lunar forces
Of nature flexing water across this sphere.
I spotted the sun on the first day of autumn
Through the salty leaves and orange falls.
Her hidden eyes were my beautiful passage
To the dreaming island, alone with her.
Skipping a beat and craving more, above
The trees and clouds and loneliness the bird soared.
We used to think she raised the torch in the immigrant sky,
But freedom is within the eyes of crying feathers.
As the mountain fed her children, life
Began, to see the moon kiss our stars goodnight.
Overflowing with unnamed faces, the river
Whispered to me changes of light. For her.
