The Empty Room
by
David Nuffer
Stuck between the last
Place I slept,
Place I want to live
Cold withered year
Finishing to thin white start
Dinner with the construction company
Under wreaths and stars
And Nat King Cole
Candles and cocktails
On the edge of my chair
Reclining and smiling,
Kept away from the stores
And everyone else
Blame it on the countdown
Rapidly approaching without my
Flashlight or helmet but
Santa's stocking cap and a room
Full of toys for me others can't
See and the claws won't let go
Until the chill is gone,
So find my coat
Lace my boots
I'm going out
Uncover my driveway and release my heart
I've seen the new year
And home with bare walls
I'm on my way
To next summer.
