The New Negro

by

Deon Mowatt

yes my skin is black like burning coal
yes my hair is rough like brillo pad
for scouring pots
and my nose wide like rail-roads
underground,
but i will not shame you by coming
to your home,
i will not shame you by saying
we are the same,
i will not shame you,
you with your pretty hair
and straight nose,
you with your cream colored skin,
you, the new and accepted negro.
