First Of All . . . Love
by
Diane Beauton
A young girl
strolls, Hollywood and Vine.
High heels and black stockings,
Walking the line.
Eyes glance over, at a street corner sign,
Good News! “Jesus loves you,”
“He’s coming soon!”
An elderly woman, asleep in the dark.
Curled under a newspaper,
On a bench in the park.
Eyes closed shut, to the church page ad,
Good News! “Jesus loves you,”
“He’s coming soon!”
Passed out in an alley an old man lies.
Gaping holes in his shoes,
Empty bottle by his side.
Clutched in his hand, a pamphlet with the words,
Good News! “Jesus loves you,”
“He’s coming soon!”
What good are the words, “Jesus loves you?”
If you don’t love them first,
What good is Good News?
Offer them help, and open your ears,
Than tell them He loves them,
Then tell them He’s near.
