Tree

by

Gala Ruiz Maldonado

These trees are plain and lifeless as they sit in the quiet forest
Their brightly colored companions have left and not yet returned
Standing lonely and numb to all things
The grass is green and the flowers have bloomed
But they still stand tall and dull like pillars of emptiness
All branches spread out as if to reach for something to hold on to
Animal! s come out of their hiding places excited for a new spring
Continuously clawing at the trees as if trying to tear them down
The leaves were once my friends
The beautiful flowers are now unknown
And the animals are my enemy
Look at what has become of me
I am now one of those pathetic trees
What happened to my joyous spring?
Was it left behind in the dead of winter?
Laying there next to my hopeless soul
