Close to Lonely

He could hardly believe he was standing here at last, meeting her for the first time in over thirty years. Looking into her soft brown eyes he knew it was where he was meant to be. He trembled as her fingers caressed his weathered face.
When your bodys had enough of me and your lying flat out on the floor. When you think Ive loved you all I can Im gonna love you a little bit more. Her eyes never left his as she whispered the lines of the song.
That used to be our song, he said, sadly.
It still can be. She told him, as a smile, that smile, opened the door to his heart.

It had taken three months of hell to arrive at this point. He would never be free of the pain hed caused his loved ones. All the screaming and shouting, his wifes endless tears and worst of all, his two young sons. Not old enough to understand, yet wise enough to know, they may never see their father again. So here he was, in a hotel room, half a world away from where he should be. And for what? A re-kindling perhaps? Chasing something that might have been. A dream of a life that never was. As she pressed herself to him, he breathed in her scent and for the first time since the birth of his second child, he cried. Unable to control the emotions threatening to engulf him, he wrapped his arms around her.

Morning came way too soon, bringing with it more misery than he could have imagined. After what they had been through that night, thirty years of pent up passion unleashed in a few heart stopping hours. He could still feel her, hear her cries and taste the tears that rolled silently down her face as they made love. And now he cried again. On the empty pillow, where she had lain, a simple scrawled note.
Im sorry Ive put you through this. It was a mistake to think I still loved you.'
'Please find it in your heart to forgive me.
Reading it countless times would not change the meaning hidden in those two lines. He was alone. He knew he would never be able to find it in his heart to forgive her, she had crushed it. And for what, one new memory, fresher than last. If only hed never replied to her message, if only hed been stronger.
If only...
