A New Day for Abdiah

Harry Buschman

Good morning Abdiah, you grace us with your presence. You are prompt this morning, Abdiah … today is the beginning of your never-ending. It will be the end of the stuttering guns, the sound of running feet on the stair and the wailing of women in the street.

You are dressed for your part Abdiah. No one would suspect the sticks of crystal dynamite and the sealed plastic bags. No one can see the wires and the tiny telephone that will ring once and once only. The next thing you will hear will be the voice of the prophet and the thanks of the faithful as they greet you on the other side.

You have your ticket for the bus? You will hear nothing but Hebrew on the bus, Abdiah … shut your ears little girl, it is the final sacrifice before the telephone rings.

I think this little episode is the shortest I’ve ever done. It’s an effort to present in the least amount of words, the greatest amount of thought.

Wow, Harry. This is a powerful piece, no matter how many words. I think the image lends itself to this kind of work. The picture made me sad and it made me think. Your story, sad though it may be, could happen. I think that makes me sadder still.

Invisibility

Standing in plain sight
Unseen
Figments of imagination
Bad dreams

Wraithlike
Clothed in rags
No one sees
The queen beneath the tatters
The king who strolls the streets

Looking for bite to eat
A bit of warmth
Shelter from wind, rain
And harsh words hurled without regard
Cold and cruel

If any deign to speak at all
Dare to speak
Fear shackles tongues that should offer
Words of comfort
To the specters of the streets

Nothing’s said
Nothing’s done
Life goes on
For Invisible
And those who fear

Invisibility
Themselves

We don’t think of Marlicia and a cinquain on the same page. Somehow you were able to pull it off in one cohesive statement too. Beautiful effort Marlicia. You’ve managed to say what you wanted to say without false sentiment.
