|Parody isn't easy, Daniel -- is it? When you're writing a fantasy comparing one thing to another like Lewis Carroll did, you've got to know all there is to know about both of them. There is tragedy in chess just as there is in war. There's king and country to be lost in both of them and it takes a braver writer than I am to find humor in either the fact or the fiction.
I think you've made a noble effort. To me, the weak spots lie in the dialogue of the Queen, (who seems more petulant than royal) and the talking horse. I like the knight and the bishops and the implacable rooks.
