She was dying and had wanted to be sure that her remains were to be cared for so that she would not be a burden and the pre-payed arrangements seemed to be the best idea.

Her remains had not been something he'd ever thought of much; her presence was enough of a problem. How much of a reduction of mass would be effected by cremation? Turning ma into an ornament wouldn't make much of a difference as far as he could see - except that an urn might be more aesthetically pleasing than this particular old lady he shared his life with.
