It will be nice if it ends that way, Harry. Very Happy

Upon the second reading, I really wondered what the old man's journey consisted of - but especially where he ended up (how well he'd done) - and what might be in store for him in the next maze - though, ultimately, I think your decision to leave it to the reader's imagination is best.

I think a lot of the journey is more like a bagatelle, where the little silver ball bounces from pin to pin at the mercy of gravity and with very little input of its own ...

Harry, it seems you are summing up your observations and experiences of life into an insight through your very short stories including the present one. Should I say you are exploring new horizon of short story? To me the following lines are the essence of the story which also justify the title.

“Doesn’t anyone win the game? Do any of us reach the exit?”

“No, my friend. That’s not why we play the game. The journey is the important thing.

Ehsan

In Tolstoy's final years he began writing stories like these. A page or two long – sometimes less. I like to think they were from his collection of snapshots; that is, things he'd started and never finished, descriptions of people and relationships that he had planned to use, and later abandoned.

There is no limit to the shortness of a short story, Ehsan, but there limits to its length. These are my snapshots, and when a reader looks at them he has no idea of what happened before and after they were taken. The reader fills in, from his or her own life's experiences as to what happened before and after. The reader contributes – and that is a rare and wonderful thing in writing.
