In this post I will not write a standard critique of this nicely written story but would like to make few rather short remarks.
There was no nuclear explosion on the Chernobyl power plant; it was a thermal explosion that pulverized the reactors highly radioactive and toxic content all over the World. As a matter of fact, the rainwater collected in May 1986 in Portland, Oregon contained 500 picocuries of I-131 per liter ( dangerous to drink and hazardous to external exposure)
It is true that Marianna suffered the high psychological stress after witnessing consequences of the Chernobyl disaster in addition to the health problems aggravated by radiation exposure. Most of the uncertainty about heath impact is caused by highly controversial and cynical research articles promising some sort of cancer to those who were exposed as young children. Not sure, if Marianna reading this but I would like to express best wishes to her!
