"The Concession"
by
Regina Calton Burchett

So now we mourn quietly
for what our country was and could have been
for the lives that will be lost in a war of other's choosing
for those who believe words with no conviction and little truth
We now quiet our hopes
that intelligence and compassion might prevail
over those who voted for a familiar name
or a refrain of self-satisfied "family values"
And now we pray America's foundations are strong enough
to withstand this self-born assault
of greed and power and corporate wealth
against our failing integrity
