Not in Your Eyes

by

Rusty Broadspear

To escape cavernous sleep
Such effort.
But eye muscles twitched
Slight facial shudders
Noticeable only to the watcher.
Eyes sprung open
As if surprised...........
'Hello Mum'
Dead eyes...........
'Mum it's me'.......
Truth flies......
'You look well Mum'.....
'Dad's here'............
She yawns without teeth,
Never been seen.
Nurse so pretty
Raises the safety guards........
'Mum's not herself'.........
I stroke her hair
And for the first time in my life
Say I love you Mum.

Blank stare........
I was there, for you Mum......
You were so aware
I moved a chair........
And you jumped
Shocked
But you weren't in your eyes
And my lies
Fell on stony soil
I gripped your hand
And
For a moment
Did I see a flicker............?
I said I love you so much
And then I said
Goodbye.
