Playthings
by
Solomon Machardson

Lovers are
each other's playthings:
they play the make believe game of love,
but, they know not that it's a game!
While it lasts, it is a dazzling dream
and they spend their time and money
to transform that dream into life.
But, time unmasks all dreams:
it exposes love as a play,
the adult game of love living,
not different from children's game
of building sand houses!
Just as children do not live
in the sand houses they build,
so, the adults do not live
in the all-love marriage they plan!
